Best for History - Expert review of Nerja Caves
After the Alhambra, this is Andalucia's second most popular attraction.
The Cuevas de Nerja, two miles from town, are the second most visited site in Andalucia after the Alhambra. It's no great surprise as the caves, which were found in 1957, have the world's biggest stalactite, as well as cave paintings of snakes, turtles and shellfish going back 15,000 years. There's just been a study completed which confirms Neanderthals and modern humans 'crossed over' here!
There's a direct bus from the bus station and, in summer, you should try and catch one of the operas or ballets put on in the cavernous main hall. Watch out for the photographer lurking by the first set of stairs. He's been here for decades and won’t give you a second chance, but most people buy the photo anyway. I certainly have mine from a visit here with my parents.
Price advice:
At 8.50 euros for adults and 4.50 euros for kids, this is a good value day out for the family. It certainly beats a trip to a stuffy museum!
