Expert review of Gantry Plaza State Park
There are many places at which to enjoy a great view of Manhattan but one of the best is at Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City. In-the-know Manhattanites have been heading to this Queens park for years (either via subway or ferry) but most people don't even know it exists. More's the pity as it's a great place for a romantic summer stroll or an activity-laden day with the kids. The park has playgrounds, basketball courts, handball courts, game tables and fishing spots. I like to come here and relax on one of the many modern seats on the 12-acre site. The mist fountain shouldn't be missed and the vintage gantries-giant industrial cranes for which the park was named-should be admired. This is a great spot from which to see the Macy's fireworks display on Independence Day.
Free for everyone. Summer concerts are free as well.
