Expert review of Tower of London
There's no escaping the fact that a visit to the Tower of London is an expensive, crowded and very touristy experience - but this huge castle and royal palace has plenty to offer us and is particularly popular with families. Children love its mighty ramparts, jovial uniformed 'Beefeaters', haughty ravens and displays of glittering jewels and awesome armour. You could easily spend the best part of a day here, but the key attractions to concentrate on are the satisfyingly dazzling Crown Jewels and the Royal Armouries displays in the White Tower. These are spread over three levels and present a thought-provoking array of weapons, armour and instruments of torture. When you visit the Tower, pomp and suffering get served up in equal measures.
Tickets at the door costs £19.80 adults, £10.45 children under 16, £17.05 concessions - including a voluntary donation towards roof repairs. If you book online you can save a few pounds, while a family ticket (£47 online) is valid for two adults and (if you are brave enough) six children. Audioguides (£4, concessions £3) are a wise investment as they bring privacy and you can listen to them while in a queue.
