Expert review of Tate Britain
Defining itself as the 'national gallery of British art', Tate Britain started life in 1897 as a purpose-built building exhibiting the art collection of the sugar magnate Henry Tate. But it's not stuck in the past - a recent re-hang has created a sensational sculpture-filled central space ('Single Form') and there is a commendable energy about the way works - both contemporary and from the formidable historic collections - are now displayed. I never fail to find something to admire here - and a fair bit to loathe too. It's worth coming just to see the great paintings of JMW Turner ('Romantics'), but don't miss Damien Hirst (Artist Rooms) and Colour & Line tucked away upstairs in the Clore Gallery.
Admission is free, charges apply to special exhibitions. A map costs £1, multimedia guides to the permanent collection £3.50 (concessions £3).
