St Paul's Cathedral

Welcome to 'the nation's church'. Built in 1675-1710 following the Great Fire of London, this magnificent cathedral has been the scene of many notable moments in British public life, including the state funerals of Admiral Lord Nelson and Sir Winston Churchill and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. It is also a very active place of worship with a renowned choir and school. Even if you are not religious, it is worth visiting for its rich historic associations, and to climb up to the 85-metre high Golden Gallery, which I consider offers the best views over London available to the general public. The walls and chapels of the Cathedral Floor, and the Crypt below, are adorned with ornate tombs and memorials remembering many great British figures - including scientists and writers as well as politicians and military leaders. Wren is there too, in a simple grave accompanied by a Latin inscription that reads 'If you seek his monument, look around you'.
