Expert review of Hvar old town
My favourite town on the islands – a lovely stone settlement with no cars.
Built around a sheltered harbour, Hvar’s old town is made up of old stone houses on three hillsides. The magnificent main square is backed by a 16th-century cathedral with a towering campanile, and rimmed by aristocratic stone palazzi, many now cafes and restaurants. On the palm-lined quayside, you’ll find the 17th-century Arsenal, where the Venetians used to repair their galleys – be sure to go upstairs to see the tiny theatre, the first public building of its kind, dating from 1612. Above town there’s a Venetian castle, beautifully floodlit at night, and south of the centre, on the coast, stands a 16th-century Franciscan Monastery, well worth a visit for its lovely cloister and small museum.
Price advice:
Entrance into the old town is free. You pay 10 kuna to go inside the theatre, 25 kuna for the castle and 20 kuna for the Franciscan Monastery.
Expert tips:
If you hike up to the castle, wear comfortable walking shoes and take a bottle of water.
