A tourist-free gem of Modernisme just a short walk from the Sagrada Família.

This relatively little-known spot is one of my favourite places in Barcelona, a hospital made up of sumptuously adorned pavilions designed by Domènech i Montaner (who also designed the Palau de la Música Catalana). It was created in keeping with the Modernistes’ belief that beauty and peaceful surroundings was essential to curing ill health, and until recently was still a functioning hospital. It’s still open to the public, and makes for a lovely wander, another world from the nearby camera-toting hordes at the Sagrada Família.

Expert tips: 
There are guided tours of the complex in English at 10.15am and 12.15pm every day.
