A compact but spectacular selection of Golden Age masterpieces.

The Rijksmuseum - the city's main fine arts museum - is undergoing an interminable restoration programme. For many years, all that has been on show is a highlights exhibition in the Philips Wing. But to my mind, that's no bad thing at all. You can still see Rembrandt's 'Night Watch', and other famous works by the likes of Hals and Vermeer, along with exquisite dolls' houses and Delftware, and be out in an hour.

Eating

At present, the Rijksmuseum has no café. Recommended nearby café options are Bagels & Beans and Cobra Café . 

Price advice: 

General admission is 12.5 euros. Free for under 19s, I amsterdam Card and Museumkaart holders.

Expert tips: 
The present entrance is at the eastern side of the building, at the junction of Hobbemastraat and Jan Luijkenstraat.
Queues to get in are very long at peak times - mid to late mornings are usually worst. Shortest queues are normally first thing - doors open at 9am - or after 4pm. The exhibition area can only handle 600 people at a time, so often visitors have to be let out before more are admitted. I amsterdam Card holders, by the way, have to queue with everyone else.
You can skip the entrance queues altogether by pre-purchasing tickets online. Then you just join the "Fast Lane" at the entrance (it's not very well signposted).
Consider using one of the high-quality audio tours on offer (3.50 euros to 5 euros).
The Rijksmuseum has an exhibition space at Schiphol airport, open daily 7am-8pm, after passport control. It's free.
