Expert review of Eight at Spier
For an authentic farm-to-table experience, Eight at Spier gets it right in style.
For visitors to the Winelands, Spier Estate is perfectly placed. Its wines are superb and availabe to taste, buy or ship from the source. There's loads for the whole family to do - from wildlife visits to art and culture and, of course, eating. I like Eight because it's unfussy, there's an air of style but it's not contrived and the food is wholesome, fresh and seasonal. It's ideal if you've got kids as they can wander outside, play on the wooden jungle gym and there's food for them that's not of the chicken nuggets ilk. Plus their farm-to-table approach is real - I've toured the farm, seen the gigantic veggie garden that supplies the kitchens and seen the happy chickens roaming among the vines.
Food and drink:
Down home food with flair is served. It is wholesome, seasonal and oh-so-fresh. The wines are excellent, from the estate and there is a certified organic offering too.
Recommended dishes:
The homemade free range chicken pie is as it should be - hearty and flavourful. and the seasonal organic veggies are excellent too.
Ambience:
The light and bright interior is splashed with contemporary furniture giving the restaurant a laidback atmosphere.
Service:
The enthusiastic waitrons are clearly proud of their farm-to-table place of work.

On the Spier Estate, along the banks of the Eerste River.

Main courses are, on average, 75 Rand.
Tables to book:
You can't go wrong with an outside table and will enjoy an al fresco experience under the oaks. I also like the 'designy' surrounds of the interiors with large glass windows overlooking the terrace.
