Best for Gourmets - Expert review of La Cocina de Colacho
I love watching jolly Colacho, the chef and owner of this restaurant, hard at work in his glassed in kitchen, while his dedicated wife looks after the diners. The dramatic, geometric design of the building is certainly quirky, providing for two interior rooms, memorably decorated in gold and silver. The food is the thing here: international, with a decidedly French twist and served in a familiar, if now rather unfashionable, nouvelle cuisine style. If you go for the set, five-course meal, this restaurant offers extraordinary value.
The five-course set menu, which changes every week, is always a surprise: you don't know what dish you are going to get until it arrives. Dishes such as steak with calvados and jus and fish loin with gin and tonic are pretty typical. The restaurant's wine warehouse is a destination in itself, which I appreciate for always showcasing the best of Lanzarote wine.
It has to be the five-course menu for just 35 euros – you can't really go wrong.
The restaurant buzzes with happy diners, and, because it is only open on Fridays and Saturdays, it is usually full.
Colacho's wife and staff work very hard to make sure everyone is happy – and they normally are.
It's on the main road east out of Playa Blanca, just inland from Marina Rubicón.
If you decide to go 'off-piste', dinner for two with wine will cost you at least 100 euros.
