Expert review of Restaurant Xado
I first heard about this place through friends who live in Palafrugell. The chef here, Charly, is a minor celebrity locally thanks to his regular cooking demonstrations on Catalan TV but the food has been a big hit with locals for years anyway.
The very good value menu of the day tends to have Spanish/Catalan staples like steamed mussels (moules mariniere) and chicken with samfaina (basically a ratatouille) but the a la carte menu also has lots of fresh fish and their speciality – a big choice of Moroccan tagines and couscous dishes. I particularly like their fish tagine.
It's a modern but cosy local restaurant with framed photos on the walls. It's usually packed with people who work or live locally catching up over lunch over dinner.
The service can be a bit hurried and surly or charming depending on whether you get one of the seemingly not-that-interested younger staff or the personable old school chaps.
It's in the centre of town in Palafrugell, about a 10-minute drive away from the beach at Calella de Palafrugell.
During Monday to Friday lunchtimes the three course menu of the day is 12 euros (including wine). A la carte main courses are 12-16 euros.
