Expert review of Fenocchio
So, you’re in the sun-baked Place Rossetti, bang in the middle of the Old Town. You know you should be studying the baroque Sainte-Réparate cathedral across the way. But the flesh is weak. You are powerless. Your entire being drags you towards the vast bank of flavours of what may be the finest ice-cream emporium in Nice.
The place has been providing damnation for those of little will-power since 1966. It’s still in the same family, still making all its own ice-creams and sorbets, and increasingly challenging perceptions of what these preparations ought to be. I had never thought, for instance, to find chard tart in ice-cream form. Or beer, for that matter.
It’s the odd flavours – tomato and basil, pecan and maple syrup, honey and pine-nuts, peppercorn and rose, chewing gum, beer – which attract the attention but, to my mind, it’s the slightly more orthodox ones which really hit the spot. I’m not sure that anyone would take a chard tart ice twice whereas I’d be happy to eat the chocolate with candied orange every day that the good Lord grants me.
But, whatever you choose, it really tastes of what it’s meant to taste off. The textures are correctly solid and creamy, fresh fruit is to the fore and the sorbets have more substance than many sorbets I could name. Crèpes, ice-cream sodas and sundaes are also available. I’ve heard they’re as good as everything else, but have no personal experience. I always get diverted by the chocolate and orange.
Tubs in which the ices can be served are, incidentally, isothermic – so the stuff doesn’t melt quite as fast as you’d expect in the heat of Nice.
You may buy your ice-cream (or sorbet or soda …) and wander off, or you may consume it on Fenocchio’s terrace on the square. Either way, you’re unlikely to be alone. The place is vastly popular and crowds build up. A tip: don’t get so engrossed in the 94 flavour options that you put your big-city antennae on hold. Pickpockets just love that.
Another tip: do as the Niçois do, and gather on Fenocchio’s terrace later in the evening. You might, for instance, foreswear dessert in the restaurant and take it here – or go completely mad and have a Fenocchio ice as a second pudding. Either way, you’ll be among the buzz of people enjoying the relative cool – both of the air and of being in the heart of Nice.
Efficient, and patient. It has to be. People can take ages choosing.

One decent scoopful - plus topping of, say, chantilly cream – comes at around 3 euros. It’s not cheap, but it is good … and cheaper than at some rival establishments.
There's another smaller, marginally less busy branch of Fenocchio just across the Old Town at 6 Rue de la Poissonnerie.
