Expert review of The Standard Grill
Despite being connected to the super hip Standard Hotel, this restaurant is a destination in its own right for both visitors and well-heeled New Yorkers. I love the unpretentious menu and the fact that you can get a good meal whether it’s an early morning breakfast, business lunch or festive late night dinner.
This isn’t a place for someone who is on a strict diet. The menu epitomizes a recent New York penchant for comfort food done really well, with country pate, skillets of delicious potatoes with mayonnaise and a hearty roast chicken for two - though there are some lighter plates of fish like an excellent trout.
If you are looking for somewhere cozy or intimate this isn’t it. The front room seats 100 and the acoustics are pure New York at rush hour.
Unfortunately the service here is not the restaurant’s selling point. Servers seem overwhelmed and it’s not unusual to get part of your order wrong, or to be forgotten altogether.
The restaurant sits under the new Highline and in the center of the Meatpacking neighborhood.
Main courses start from US$15 to US$32.50, a typical range for a restaurant of this type.
Don’t let them seat you all the way in the back - it’s the most noisy part of the restaurant and the staff tend to forget your table.
