Expert review of Pylos
When people come to NYC for Greek food, they usually head to Astoria, the epicenter for great, authentic Greek cuisine. With the opening of Pylos in the East Village, those foodies, like myself, don't have to trek too far for great food. What makes Pylos so special is its modern take on Greek cuisine. Everything is artfully prepared and you'll be hard-pressed to stop eating.
Fresh and hearty; everything tastes as if it was just caught or bought. The food is clean and never too fatty, making it a great destination for anyone watching their fat intake. The wine list is naturally heavy in Greek wine and the selections are all really delicious.
You’ll find traditional Greek dishes such as pastitsio, saganaki and moussaka on the menu, but opt for more unique fare. The patates psites (potatoes) are seasoned lightly and fragrantly with lemon and garlic. The sardelles schares are really amazing, even if you're hesitant to try sardines.
The interior is very rustic yet chic. Clay pots hang from the ceiling, giving you the feeling you're in a Cycladic taverna. The stone back room is decorated in cerulean blue and white. The crowd is full of foodies, most locals and Greeks.
Service is amazing; never had a complaint here. They anticipate your next move and leave you alone when you want more private time.
In the heart of the East Village. Bars and other restaurants are all over East 7th Street but this is a bit of a refined oasis. You never hear the street noise.
Dinner for two runs to about $100. Brunch is a better deal, at about $60 for two.
I like the back room. It's a bit more "Greek" to me.
