Expert review of Locanda Verde
There are no shortages of good Italian restaurants in New York but Locanda Verde in the Greenwich Hotel is my favorite new arrival, with a high octane atmosphere and amazing food.
Chef Andrew Carmellini is one of Manhattan’s rising stars. Go for his tasty small plates like wild mushroom crostini, marinated beets with pesto and gorgonzola, and Mediterranean sardines, or excellent mains like pumpkin agnolotti, porcetta sandwiches and fire roasted garlic chicken for two. The desserts are unmissable too - try the Maple budino and ricotta cheesecake.
It's an amazing, buzzy, popular place, which doesn’t feel pretentious, just bustling. Although on Friday nights there are too many hedge funders with expense accounts for my taste.
I was extremely impressed with the front desk person who has quite a job to control the reservations for so many covers. The rest of the staff are equally professional and friendly.
In the Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca - one of Hollywood’s new darlings.
Best to go on an expense account or for a special occasion. Main courses here run from US$14 and a three-course meal without wine is about US$36 per person.
Star sightings happen at the back tables near the buzzy kitchen.
