Expert review of Restaurante Altamirano
This vibey, well-known, family-run restaurant is adored by everyone in the area, and me, for its classic tapas. I reckon their seafood tapas are amongst the best in Marbella. Not only that, but this charming eatery, located on the edge of one of the casco historico’s (old quarter's) most emblematic squares, offers plenty of opportunities for my favourite hobby - people watching.
At weekends be prepared to have to wait for a table. People often hover patiently outside to grab a space.
Altamirano is known for offering the freshest fish and seafood. My Spanish friends have been known to drive for an hour or so to get here to eat the Malagueño speciality, pescaíto frito (small, fried fish). You’re invited to order either tapas or full 'rations' of any dish off the extensive menu.
The decoration is unfussy, unlike many of the nearby restaurants. You’ll usually find families and groups of friends around the paper tablecloths chatting loudly over beers or glasses of crisp, white wine.
The excellent, informal service from the waiters is a big plus. They have worked there their whole lives and know the menu and specials like the backs of their hands.
Plaza Altamirano, after which the restaurant is named, is one of the most photographed parts of the Old Town.
The average tapas session for two, with wine, will cost about 20 euros.
