Expert review of The Harwood Arms
TV chef and co-owner Mike Robinson personally shoots all the venison served at this spacious and stylish pub-restaurant, which has picked up several accolades (including a Michelin star) since opening in 2008. It’s a must-visit if you’re staying in south-west London, and worth a trip if you’re not.
If I lived closer to this place I would be in there every week, eating my way through the daily-changing menu. The kitchen showcases wild ingredients – grouse, rabbit, mushrooms, sea purslane, blackberries and whatever else is in season – and brings new life to traditional recipes such as faggots (minced meat patties wrapped in caul) and parkin (a spicy gingerbread-type cake). You don’t have to take a table for dinner – the venison scotch eggs and kipper croquettes served at the bar have become something of a legend locally. Be sure to try some of the real ales too.
The locals are a smart crowd even when off-duty but can get boisterous.
The staff are friendly and polite.
The Harwood Arms is in a residential area where parking is a challenge! But it’s walkable (10-15 minutes) from the tube.
Bar snacks are £2-£7, main courses are £15-£20.
