Expert review of Barrafina
This chic, lively tapas joint, based on Barcelona’s famous Cal Pep, has been embraced by locals since opening. It’s tiny, but great fun sitting at the bar watching the chefs at work.
The menu’s divided into cured meats, tortilla, vegetables and salads, seafood and meat – choose dishes from across these categories and you’ll have a well-balanced meal. Having said that, I’d check what specials are available and focus on the seafood. The morcilla, chips and bravas sauce and dessert of Santiago tart are among my other must-haves. Barrafina’s sherries are a real treat, too – and the wines if you’re interested in Spain’s new wave producers.
A slice of fashionable Barcelona. You’ll probably be sitting (and queuing) shoulder-to-shoulder with a flash Soho media crowd.
Professional and knowledgeable, yet informal.
On one of Soho’s best restaurant streets, just off Soho Square.
Bar snacks start at £2; most of the tapas fall in the £6-£9 bracket but the Jubago ham is £18 a plate.
The same owners run a more formal Spanish restaurant called Fino in Fitzrovia – see website for details.
