Expert review of La Cabana
I recommend this restaurant to homesick Brits missing a taste of home. Not for the food which is pretty international, but because this cosy restaurant, where Darren and Deb, a British couple create and serve nouvelle cuisine style food, is a magnet for UK holidaymakers.
The international menu making use of local ingredients changes weekly and tends to feature rich sauces. There were several roast meats featured when I was there last: roast rack of lamb, chargrilled pork and honeyroast duck. Given the heat, I fancied something lighter and went for a starter of seared scallops with bacon and an orange and ginger marmalade, which were succulent with just the right amount of additional flavour, followed by the fish of the day. As always, the dishes were exquisitely presented, although the nouvelle cuisine style can seem a bit forced.
Don't miss one of the delicious desserts.
This small restaurant with an open kitchen that is almost like eating in someone's home can get very warm. Tables are relatively close together, but noise is not usually a problem.
The service by Deb was - as always - smiling, helpful and unflustered, despite the full restaurant. Deb and Darren often take the time to chat with their guests over a nightcap, and have even been known to give them a lift home.
It's on a busy road with some parking outside, in the village of Macher, about 10 minutes away by car from the resort of Puerto del Carmen.
Main courses cost between 12 euros and 15 euros; starters are around 8 euros.
There is little to choose between the tables.
