Expert review of Lungarno 23
A lively, carnivore-friendly restaurant overlooking the river and Uffizi.
This relatively new opening has proved to be a real local hit; last time I tried to get in it was booked up for the following three evenings. One of the owners rears highly-prized Chianina cattle down in the Valdichiana and serves it up at this Florence restaurant.
Food and drink:
The main-player on the menu here is beef, superb beef. Hamburgers come with various toppings, in two sizes (180g and 300g) and are properly char grilled to your specifications. I asked for mine medium-rare and it was perfect; shame about the lukewarm chips. Other omnipresent meaty standards include roast beef (sliced wafer thin and very pink), carpaccio and a whopping 300g steak tartare. The menu of the day offers hope for non-meat eaters in the likes of porcini mushroom soup (a little disappointing), ravioli stuffed with gorgonzola and pears and a choice of salads and cheeses. To finish, tarte tatin, cheesecake, pear and chocolate tart and ice cream from Vivoli. The wine list is exclusively Tuscan with a limited choice by the glass.
Ambience:
The place was heaving when I visited; lots of girly groups and not a tourist in sight although it was off-season. The mod-rustic interior is welcoming and cosy, but not at all cramped and there’s a wonderful veranda overlooking the river to the Galleria degli Uffizi beyond that is glassed-in for cooler weather.
Service:
The staff are friendly but a bit slow.
Location:
It's on the south bank of the Arno just east of the Ponte Vecchio; the view across the river is wonderful.
Price advice:
Hamburgers cost 12-20 euros depending on the size and come with chips and salad. Other dishes cost from 10 euros. Wines by the glass are from 3 euros, and by the bottle from 12 euros.

Next time, I’d try and nab a table on the veranda. Book ahead!
