Expert review of Da Mario
Market workers vie for space with tourists, business folk and students at Mario’s cheerful trattoria where no bookings are taken and you must be prepared to queue. Tables and stools are crammed into a single room backed by a tiny kitchen where the Colsi family have been serving up genuine Florentine home cooking to the hungry hoards for 50 years, and charging knock-down prices. It’s only open for lunch.
Depending on the day of the week, you’ll find all the Florentine culinary staples here; ribollita, bean and black cabbage soup, garlick-y, rosemary-spiked roast pork and bistecca (which carries a supplement). The house wines are perfectly drinkable, but you can also order from a short wine list.
It's cramped, noisy and no-frills but fun; you sit on wooden stools at smply-laid tables and might find yourself in very close proximity to your neighbours.
Frantic but pleasant: it's amazing that there is any time for chat when you're this busy, but the staff manage somehow.
It's at the back of the foodie heaven of the Mercato Centrale food market.
If you avoid the bistecca (for which there is a supplement), you can eat three courses for around 20 euros.
You can’t book; be prepared to take what comes.
