Expert review of Maison Boulud
Despite recent personnel changes, the modern French at this branch of New York celeb chef Daniel Boulud’s culinary empire remains one of Beijing's best options for a romantic dinner. That's mostly thanks to the skills of Executive Chef Brian Reimer, who's helmed the kitchen with precision and verve since it opened for the Olympics in 2008.
Expect frogs legs, confit of duck, roast pork belly and other classic French dishes with a contemporary luxe twist. Weekend brunch stars the incomparable ‘DB Burger’ topped with truffles and braised short ribs. The wine list is the most impressive in town, boasting some 400 bottles.
Hushed old world ambience within a stunning, century-old building bedecked with antiques and smartly dressed tables.
Probably the best in the city, even though beloved maitre ‘d Ignace has moved on to greener pastures.
Set within Qianmen 23, the former US legation on the southeast side of Tiananmen Square (closest subway station is Qianmen, Line 1).
You might consider it the one ‘blowout’ of your trip. That said, it’s certainly cheaper than comparable restaurants in London, Paris or New York, especially for weekend brunch.
