Expert review of Greetje
Raw herring. Pea soup. Vegetable mash and sausage. Traditional Dutch cuisine doesn't set the pulse racing. However, over the past decade or so a number of restaurants have reinvented the Netherlands' culinary offerings. One of these establishments is the delightful Greetje. Named after the owner's mum, it is justifiably very popular.
You'll be offered imaginative reworkings of traditional Dutch recipes and dishes, using local ingredients. Specialities regularly on the menu include Frysian sugar bread with duck liver terrine, and crème brûlée with Dutch black liquorice ice cream. A main course might be lemon sole with a turnip and celery mash. If you're feeling piggy, you can opt for a selection of starters (Greetje's Big Beginning) and puddings (Greetje's Grand Finale) - at least two on your table must order them.
It's a classical, elegant-looking but unshowy restaurant, with bare-wood floors, white linen on tables, pretty flower displays and black-and-white photos of Amsterdam on the walls.
Excellent - capable, caring and thoughtful.
In a quiet and attractive neighbourhood, on the eastern edge of the Old Centre, near the Montelbaanse Tower.
Expect to pay around 45-55 euros for three courses, excluding wine. There's no set menu.
