Expert review of Bordewijk
If you're after reliable, top-notch cuisine, served in gimmick-free surroundings and a pretension-free atmosphere, then I can't think of anywhere better to recommend to you than long-established Bordewijk - it's been around since 1985.
Chef/proprietor Wil Demandt (who makes a point of coming out and chatting to guests) concentrates primarily on French dishes - perhaps foie gras, veal kidneys and brains, tarte tatin - though there are also some Italian offerings, such as home-made tagliolini with black truffle, or a traditional Roman oxtail creation. Ingredients such as Hereford beef and Bresse pigeon are impressively sourced. Leave room for the cheese trolley, which is a definite highlight. There's a long and interesting mostly French and Italian wine list.
The modern, open-plan dining room, with its bare, red-topped tables and boarded floors, distracts little from the food. The only complaint most visitors have is the acoustics - it can be noisy.
Confident and knowledgeable; no airs and graces.
On the Noordermarkt, a focal point of the lovely Jordaan district.
You can eat here pretty affordably if you stick to the daily set menus - 39 euros for three courses, 49 euros for four. Choose from the carte and you're looking at spending probably 10-20 euros more a head.
