Expert review of Hotel Los Fariones
Lanzarote's oldest family-run hotel has a longstanding high reputation.
I often suggest this intimate (despite having 248 rooms), local-family-owned hotel to older visitors, or those with walking difficulties. Because it was the first hotel to be built on the island (in 1966), the owners managed to bag the best spot next to the lighthouse, with direct access to the beach.
Location:
In the heart of the resort, minutes away from the shops and restaurants, with direct access to the beach from the front of the hotel.
Bedrooms:
There is not an awful lot to choose between the various category of rooms (double/single/junior suite/suite) other than size. I found some of the furnishings a bit dark and dated, but they are spacious and all of them have sea views and either balcony or terrace, and robes and slippers are provided. On occasion, there is a problem with noisy guests, but reception staff are happy to move you.

Public areas:
Towering palms dominate a pleasant, compact pool area (one fresh water, one salt water) that is surrounded by mature, well-kept gardens, which lead down to an attractive beach. The free sauna is a welcome addition. Wi-Fi is, thankfully, free, and the Internet can also be accessed from a public computer for a fee.
Eating and drinking:
Choose just bed and breakfast or half board (breakfast and dinner option). If you are staying for a week or longer, the food tends to get repetitive, and there are lots of other good options nearby. The buffet breakfast and dinner (also buffet) are good, although more three star than four. The pool bar serving decent snacks is a sociable spot. The compact bar/lounge area, decorated with cane chairs, is the scene for some low-key, occasional live music, but bear in mind this hotel is not really the place for bar flies or those who want to be entertained.
Leisure facilities:
A tennis court can be used free of charge by guests and is in a magical location next to the beach with artificial lighting for nighttime use, There is also mini-golf and sauna (both included in the room rate), and massage and hairdressing service (extra charge), and a children's playground.
Service:
Most of the staff here have worked for the hotel group for many years and they are generally a cheerful, helpful lot, although on occasions I have found them a little brusque.

Who stays there:
The overwhelming majority of people – mostly Irish, English, German and some Scandinavians – who come here (many year after year) are couples of all ages, without children. However, during high season the number of kids is significant, and they are well catered for.
Price advice:
This hotel is a little more expensive than its two siblings within the Fariones group, but it is well worth it for the location.
