Best for On a budget - Expert review of La Villa Marbella
La Villa Marbella certainly ticks a lot of boxes. Great value for its quality of accommodation, excellent location and superb personal service, it also has a certain panache and confidence about itself. This is all down to its genial owner Marcos Torres, who, since opening five years ago, has undertaken an impressive expansion plan. His collection of charming townhouses all within a minutes' walk of each other in the heart of Marbella's casco historico just keeps growing. The Brazilian currently has five - each of them with their own personal stamp – and he intends to expand in to more. Having worked for Club Med for 19 years, he knows a thing or two about hotels and he cuts no corners when it comes to quality of linen, décor and cleanliness.
Spread across a series of quiet pedestrianed streets in the heart of Marbella old town, so you are close to all the restaurants and shops.
Most of the 14 bedrooms (across the five houses) have an Asian theme, thanks to owner Marcos having worked for many years in the Far East. Expect Asian silk cushions and throws and Buddha figurines all over the place. The rooms are spotlessly clean and vary in size and price, with some having their own mini-kitchens, and others big private roof terraces. All have air-conditioning, kettles with free coffee and tea, a mini-bar, safe and WiFi. The bathrooms have nice products and use good, natural materials. I particularly liked the 'courtyard house', which has a fabulous pool - said to be the only one in the heart of Marbella old town.

All of the five houses have their own sitting rooms, with a range of sofas and places to relax. They are generally relaxing rooms and there are vending machines, plenty of books and a stereo. I also liked the huge roof terrace/sun deck where you can baste yourself looking across the Marbella rooftops. There is an interesting range of paintings around the place.
While there is no restaurant as such, the communal breakfast area (breakfast is free) is an excellent spot at the top of the main house. It is a great spot to start the day and the delicious mix of breads, cakes and croissants is only matched by its fresh juices and jams.
The big surprise is the good-sized swimming pool in the back garden of the courtyard house. All guests can use the pool.
Top quality service from a group of reliable and knowlegeable professionals.

Popular apparently with the Prince of Romania, various British footballers and a couple of American fashion designers. The hotel also attracts local ex-patriates from the Andalucia region, Gibraltarians, plus tourists from further afield. It's a good choice for groups travelling together as there are five buildings comprising of 14 rooms.
