Best for Nightlife - Expert review of Hotel Riva
Chic boutique hotel overlooking the harbour in Hvar Town.
Reopened in 2006, following total renovation, the Riva’s traditional Dalmatian stone façade and wooden window shutters conceal a funky modern interior. Expect a smart minimalist look, in neutral creams and greys, with splashes of red added by poufs and scatter cushions. I love the Riva’s open-air lounge-bar, with brightly coloured Perspex plant pots sprouting miniature olive trees, on the palm-lined seafront promenade out front.
Location:
Stunning: overlooking the Venetian-era harbour, in the centre of Hvar Town. If you arrive by ferry or catamaran from Split, the hotel is directly in front of you as you disembark. The old town is pedestrian-only, so there are no worries about traffic noise here. However, late-night music from the nearby bars and the yachts that moor up along the quay could disturb light-sleepers. The last time I visited I stayed in a ‘sea view’ room at the front and loved it – if you like to sleep before midnight, ask for a ‘city view’ room at the back.
Bedrooms:
Decorated in cream, grey and charcoal, each room has an entire wall bearing a giant black-and-white portrait photo of a movie icon (think Brigitte Bardot or Anita Ekberg). My favourite feature is the bathroom – the bathtub is visible from the bed through a large internal glass window.

Public areas:
The Riva's BB Club bar is a lovely front terrace overlooking the harbour, furnished with boxy wicker sofas and potted olive trees. It's one of Hvar’s hippest venues for evening cocktails and its west-facing orientation makes it a perfect spot to watch the sunset.
Eating and drinking:
Buffet breakfast and all-day snacks are served on the waterside terrace of the BB Club; innovative Mediterranean cuisine, plus a sushi bar, at the adjoining Roots Restaurant.
Leisure facilities:
Guests have the use of the Sensori Spa at the Adriana (sister hotel), complete with a rooftop pool, outdoor massage cabanas, outdoor whirlpool, and steam room. The Riva’s concierge can arrange scuba diving, sea kayaking, sailing, hiking, mountain biking and wine tasting trips.
