Expert review of Residenza del Moro
The 11 rooms and suites in the converted first floor of this aristocratic 16th-century palazzo are each very different from the next, but all are decidedly luxurious. Original architectural features such as trompe l’oeil frescoes, Baroque stucco work, and soaring ceilings are on display throughout and the whole place is furnished with precious antiques and fine fabrics. The owner’s collection of contemporary art hangs on the walls, both in the bedrooms and public spaces, a surprisingly successful juxtaposition of old and new. The 'X factor' here is the lovely hanging garden.
Accessed via a small courtyard off a quiet, narrow street that is lined with antique shops, between the train station and the river. Ten minutes' walk to the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio.
Your choice of bedroom will probably be dictated by what you can afford, but even the cosy Biblioteca (the cheapest) is impressive. If you’ve got the bucks, there’s the vast Marchese suite housed in the former ballroom, the Moro suite with its hidden whirlpool bath, the Alcove suite occupying a private theatre, its whirlpool bath placed on the stage.

There’s plenty of room for relaxation in the various comfortable sitting rooms, both large and more intimate. The hanging garden is shaded by lofty trees and white umbrellas and is a great spot for breakfast or a pre-dinner cocktail.
Breakfast is served in the garden in warm weather. Hot and cold snacks are available on request 24 hours a day (highly recommended in the garden on a warm summer evening) and while there’s no restaurant in the hotel, some of the city’s best lie within easy walking distance.
There’s a small gym.
One of the Residenza’s selling points is its highly personalised service; the superb staff will cater to guest’s every whim. There’s a butler to unpack and to prepare snacks throughout the day, and there’s even a dog-sitting service.

People (mostly Americans) who are prepared to pay over the odds for personal butler services and the like.
Prices for the cheaper rooms are more accessible than you might think in low season.
