Classic Florentine hotel with a retro atmosphere and fantastic location.
Anyone whose ideal vision of a Florence hotel has Room with a View overtones will love the Tornabuoni-Beacci which first opened in 1917 and which, in spite of the addition of modern comforts and amenities, has managed to retain the charming period feel of an Edwardian pensione. Occupying the top floors of 15th-century Palazzo Minerbetti Strozzi, the decorations and furnishings, both in the quite grand public rooms and the bedrooms, are old-fashioned (lots of pastel colours, antiques, Murano glass chandeliers and old mirrors) but well-maintained and it all feels a bit like staying with an elderly aunt.

Bang in the middle of the Via Tornabuoni - designer shopping heaven.
Bedrooms:
There are 28 bedrooms in all, including eight singles. The suites and larger rooms have recently been refurbished and are really quite elegant, but the standard doubles are looking a little worn and some are a bit gloomy. They are, however, gradually being upgraded.

Public areas:
Wood smoke and floor wax are the pervasive smells in the comfortable, atmospheric reading room where a fire is lit in the huge old fireplace in winter. In warmer weather the large, flower-filled roof terrace, with its views over the city to the hills beyond, comes into its own as does the adjacent bar. Meals are served in the dining room in winter.
Eating and drinking:
Buffet breakfast is served on the roof terrace in summer where there is also a bar, open from 7am-midnight. It's a marvellous spot for just about anything, but particularly magical for a sunset aperitivo. Dinner is available in the summer season and served on the terrace.
Service:
Genteel and old-school with lots of help planning restaurants, sight-seeing and trips out of town when required.

Who stays there:
Guests are, on the whole, an older bunch (predominantly English and American) and there are many repeat guests who have been coming here for 30 years. The atmosphere is quite hushed - younger people might find it all a little staid.
