Expert review of Spier Hotel
Times have certainly changed since I was a student at Stellenbosch University and Friday afternoons meant copious bottles of wine on the lawns of Spier. Since then the sprawling estate has had a major refurb and now it embraces having something for every kind of visitor. Whether you're an eco warrior who embraces their biodynamic operating principles, a wine lover or someone who is after 'a taste of Africa', there's a lot on offer. A somewhat sanitised version of 'authentic South Africa' (some call it Afro Disney) awaits - from the quaint village that houses the hotel rooms to Moyo where an African Feast is served complete with drums and live entertainment accompaniment, plus the cheetah and raptor park where up-close-and-personal interactions with animals are made possible. All that said, given the setting, with its beautiful Simonsberg mountain and vineyard vistas and a location that's close to a host of happenings and estates in the Winelands, it's no surprise that many a tour operator makes block bookings here.
Spier is situated approximately 45 minutes from Cape Town and it's a further 10 minutes to Stellenbosch. There are a number of wine estates close by.
The large village consists of adjoining townhouses with three rooms in each (there are a whopping 155 rooms in total). The rooms are decorated in a South African heritage style and are a comfortable size. The bathrooms could do with some love and the downstairs suite looking out onto the communal courtyard has privacy issues (we had to keep our shutters closed).

Thanks to its size, there are plenty of public pockets for guests to enjoy.
Moyo is a popular tourist must-do while the charming Eight, serving only farm-grown and organic where possible produce, is a lovely lunchtime venue. Wine tasting is a must and the on-site deli offers pre-packed picnics to enjoy on the lawns around the lake.
There is an on-site spa, an excellent cellar wine tasting experience, a number of walks and trails on the farm, a cheetah outreach project and the excellent annual Spier Contemporary show. As patrons of the arts, a new South African contemporary art and craft shop is a fitting extension of the Spier brand.
The service can be stretched.
