Best for Romance - Expert review of Schlosshotel im Grunewald
If you’re looking to get away from it all – and to do so in refined style, this stunning villa is, to my mind, one of the best options Berlin has to offer. The building was constructed as a residential palace in 1912 as a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm to his confidant. Renovated by Karl Lagerfield in the 1990s, the building retains its regal splendour, embellished by excellent service and food.
Located in the upmarket residential suburb of Grünewald, the Schlosshotel enjoys a setting in a green expanse of gardens. The hotel is within easy reach of the palaces at Potsdam and has great access to the nearby Wannsee area, but is not so convenient for the city centre.
There are 53 individually designed rooms including 10 suites, which are all equipped good amenities such as free minibars, free wireless internet access, full HD televisions and Tivoli radio - and for the technorati, all suites feature Apple iMacs. You should specifically request what kind of room you want as the quality varies, though the décor is always tasteful and uses greys, muted colours and subtle lighting. Comfortable beds have plush pillows and fine linen, and separate walk-in bathrooms feature lots of marble, large baths and separate showers.

The Belle Epoque great hall features a grand staircase, chandeliers, piano and flowers arrangements. The hall leads out to a tranquil patio area where you can have lunch or drinks and there are plenty of comfortable chairs and sofas.
The beautifully decorated Vivaldi restaurant reflects the decadent richness of the grand hall. The room features panelled walls, high gold-painted ceilings, huge mirrors and white tables and chairs. Vivaldi serves cosmopolitan Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. A simpler menu is offered at Le Jardin, in a garden conservatory, which is especially good for breakfast. The English-style bar, Le Tire Bouchon, resembles a gentleman’s club with its stripy wallpaper, chesterfields, floral-print armchairs, large fireplace and wooden cabinets stocked with a selection of cigars and liquor.
The hotel’s setting provides opportunities for plenty of outdoor activities such as running, cycling or just strolling through the woods. Leisure facilities inside the hotel include a large swimming pool with views of the garden, Jacuzzi, Finnish sauna and Turkish bath. The full-service spa offers a range of massage and beauty services.
Service is discreet and friendly, but the emphasis on feeling at home can mean an absence of staff at times.
